Locating power in party leader selection

Abstract In this article, the aim is to enhance our understanding of who has power over leader selection in political parties. To end, we apply an analytical framework which process divided into three phases: gatekeeping, preparation and decision. The focus on determining extent each these phases influential for outcome thereby locating distribution intra‐party power. Underpinning analysis conviction that comparison too limited if it relies solely information about formal procedures, including composition selectorate. We should also take preselection phase account. Empirically, examine a sample recent processes European parliamentary democracies. contrast previous research politics, suggested ascendancy party public office, results suggest enduring strength ground central office.
